Knygos aprašymas

Drawing on archival records, autobiography, and fiction, this remarkable study sheds new light on English language instruction for American Indian children in the late nineteenth century. The perspectives of government officials, missionaries, and European American teachers reveal the rationale for the government's English-only policy and how it was implemented. Also included are the voices of Native teachers and students, showing how their acceptance of or resistance to the colonizing education was intimately connected to their particular family and community histories. America's Second Tongue was awarded the Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize by the Modern Language Association and named a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title by the Association of College and Research Libraries.
