Excerpt: I watched from my front porch as he walked up the hill and across the walk in front of my house. Just as always I looked at the ease of the movements. There was no hint of puffing as he hiked along effortlessly. He didn't see me looking as he reached down as if he were a third baseman dropping his hand to make a barehand pickup of a hot grounder. Pulling up a tall blade of grass, I saw him chew on the end of it as he moved past. Although he hadn't seen me, I had filled my eyes with him. Hardly a part of him had missed my view. From the tip of his honey colored, crew-cut, to the long pair of white sneakers on his feet, I took it all in. His age was only a guess on my part, but I judged him to be close to twenty. In spite of the dozen or so times that I had seen and observed him, I didn't know his name, or even where he lived. He passed by the house and then went beyond and into his private nowhere. Each time he took with him his fresh, handsome face and nearly perfect build.
