Created by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Atlas contains some 200 full colour maps and explanatory materials that detail all known aspects of the Holocaust between the years 1933 and 1950. Text and maps are organized geographically and chronologically. In addition, the Atlas contains a comprehensive gazetter with alternative spellings for place names, a glossary of terms, and a general bibliography. The user-friendly interface of the multimedia CD-ROM allows users to browse through the maps thematically, geographically, or chronologically, and includes map animations, text, and audio narration.

This atlas combines selected text from Macmillan's Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (1990) and Encyclopedia of the Third Reich (1991), 275 maps, and more than 500 photographs (including some aerial), a list of maps, an index, and a glossary with pronunciations. You can approach the atlas thematically and find maps on numerous topics such as the rail system used for deportations, camps where human medical experiments were performed, the paths of the abundant forced marches, plans of Nazi concentration camps, location of camps in various countries, sites where Nazi Einsatzgruppens (mobile killing units) operated, city and ghetto street maps, and locations of synagogues attacked on Kristallnacht. We could go on and on. An alternative approach is by geographic area or to search the list of maps by keyword. In all approaches, general maps lead progressively to more specific maps. Cross references to other maps, nongraphic yet chilling photographs, and text supplement all maps. Bottom Line: This disc is highly recommended for all libraries because of what it covers and the quality of the presentations. An excellent supplement to the reference materials available on the topic. Unfortunately, the maps cannot be printed.
