From Booklist
The Farm Animals series introduces subjects to guess what? Each spread is its own chapter consisting of a heading, two or three simple sentences, and two or more photos, sometimes serving as background for the text. These chapters cover the animal’s farm environment, food, reproduction, and care, as well as the food they produce or become, and a sampling of breeds around the world. A final spread of interesting facts and useful words concludes each text. Some photographs include sounds (cluck, bleat) and eating words (munch, peck, and slurp). Beginning readers attracted by the format may be thrown by the combination of a first-person introduction and a third-person explanation that might be the farmer’s point of view. Pig shows wild as well as domesticated breeds, which could benefit from further explanation. Throughout the series the word breeds refers to animal strains; there are no index entries for breeding, though breed is used (and once defined) in the sense of creating young animals. This series would be particularly helpful for youngsters with little real-life experience with these once very familiar animals. Grades K-2. --Kathleen Isaacs
