Our experiences, perceptions and feelings regarding crime and safety affect our every day lives and shape our behaviour, whether this is where we choose to live, the paths we walk home or the people and places we avoid. This research topic chooses to investigate the differences in people''s experiences, their perceptions and feelings about crime and safety, examining how these are affected by situational factors in their locality. The investigation undertakes surveyed, quantitative analysis to establish initial trends across residents in two communities in North Tyneside, namely the estates of Meadow Well, North Shields and Forest Hall Estate, Benton. The findings of the quantitative data sample were then utilised to compile qualitative questions which were presented to two focus group meetings undertaken with residents of each area. The information gleaned from both aspects of the research was used to critically evaluate the urban design of each of the estates, primarily in relation to UK situational crime prevention planning policy.
