Knygos aprašymas

In this urgent election wakeup call, award winning correspondent Mort Rosenblum, details how Donald Trump is following the demagogues' handbook to complete a coup d'état. He undermines honest reporting and divides the nation at home while alienating allies and favoring foes abroad. Even if he loses, his damage will take years of skillful diplomacy to repair. As Americans focus on absurd antics and lies, what they don't know is killing them.

Rosenblum has watched up close as democracies slid into dictatorship across the world. From Europe and Asia, he illustrates how simmering hot spots risk war. China now hostile, muscles aside America to impose its authoritarian image on the world. Russia, again, rules an Evil Empire. In America, he profiles a Fruit Lady near Tucson, who sticks blindly to Trump despite a deadly pandemic, devastating drought and a collapsed economy that have left her near ruin. Others bemoan the domestic impact of Trump's folly abroad.

As Alan Weisman, author of The World Without Us, says of the book: "Rosenblum, likely the most traveled correspondent in the history of journalism, has borne brilliant, incisive witness to reality in 200 countries, some that so longer exist. Here, he wields the scalpel of his inimitable prose to cut crap from truth in his own country - lest it disappear, too."

ReviewPaul Theroux wrote of Coups and Earthquakes, the first of Rosenblum's dozen books on current affairs: "Not since the late A. J. Liebling -- with whom Rosenblum shares wide experience with wolfish good humor - has anyone so successfully sized up the waywardness and splendor of newsgathering."
More recently, Jon Lee Anderson of the New Yorker lauded Little Bunch of Madmen: "A rare blend of great storytelling and pure wisdom...the best thing yet written about the state of modern journalism by one of its few true living masters, and every reporter working today."

About the AuthorRosenblum, former editor of the International herald Tribune in Paris, spent four decades with the Associated Press based in Kinshasa, Lagos and as bureau chief in Singapore Buenos Aires and Paris. For two decades he was AP's chief international correspondent. Rosenblum has reported on climate change, refuge migrations underreported world crisis and has been nominated eight times for a Pultizer and winning three times AP's top reporting prize. His book Olives: the Life and Lore of a Noble Fruit won a James Beard award. Between reporting trips, Rosenblum works from a boat on the Seine, a Provence olive farm and a home in Tucson, Arizona.
