"The Little Shetland" is the first book in a series about a ten-year-old girl named Sally who lives on a horse ranch. When a little Shetland pony is discovered lost in a dairy farmer's field, the farmer takes the pony to his neighbour's horse ranch where it can be taken care of by Sally and her family. In this book, we are introduced to Sally, her dog, and all her other animal friends on the ranch, and finally to the little Shetland.


About the Author


David Smith comes from an old school, middle class, blue collar upbringing. He has always had a passion for animals of all kinds. He used to catch frogs and snakes from the ravine behind his home, had aquariums with fish, and rodents such as mice, gerbils, and squirrels in his bedroom, and rabbits and dogs in his backyard. Having a dog by his feet while holding a rabbit in his arms as he watched an active bird feeder gave him peace and happiness from an early age. As his life moved forward he pursued his love for the animal kingdom, eventually ending up spending thirty-six years of his life training and racing horses; sometimes up to forty at a time. To him they were a thousand pound puppy. In 1992 he was fortunate and honoured to have driven the world’s fastest standardbred horse by the name of Matts Scooter, and was also privileged in 2002 to have trained a Breeders Crown and world champion by the name of Armbro Amoretto. It was his love of horses, and the world around them that led him to write "The Little Shetland". David was lucky enough to have Bev Newton agree to illustrate his first three books.
